新 年 快 樂 Sun Nien Fai Lok - Happy New Year
These two sayings are paired together as
greetings for Chinese New Year. Our wish
for the 2021 Chinese New Year of the Ox is to
celebrate together the traditions and practices
of the most important Chinese holiday of the
year. Chinese New Year is also known as
Lunar New Year and Spring Festival.
The 2021 year of the Metal Ox brings career advancement, success in business,
prosperity, and wellness for all Chinese Zodiac animals. This year predicts new career
opportunities so don’t let anxiety or negative thinking affect you. The Ox denotes hard
work, positivity and honesty to be manifested in all of us in the coming 12 months.
We hope you will take the time to prepare for the New Year, and the information
following is a guide of how to prepare as we close out the Year of the Rat 2020.
Go back to our roots and follow the traditions passed on to us by our parents or
grandparents. Food brings all families together, and hopefully the information we have
gathered will explain why we prepared specific dishes.
As you read the following information, let’s refresh our memories on how to get ready for
Chinese New Year. The Internet is loaded with information, some you might recognize
and some not. Please follow your family practices; while at the same time, consider to
add some new traditions to your family celebration.
Chinese or Lunar New Year Day – Year of the Ox starts on February 12, 2021. In
China, the Spring Festival starts on New Year’s Eve and celebrated 15 days.
Prepare for the New Year:
• The Kitchen God observes your family during the year
and reports your behavior to the Jade Emperor. During
house cleaning before the end of the lunar year, the past
years Kitchen God image is removed and burned to send
his image to the heavens. To protect your hearth and
home, you can purchase his paper image to post near
the stove.
• Display foods offerings to pay respect to ancestors and deities. Some foods and
what they symbolized:
o Full jar of rice – fertility, luck and wealth
o Spring Onions – sounds like “to be smart”
